The United Arab Emirates has announced a significant new environmental initiative focused on cultivating new coral reefs around the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. The ambitious project is a partnership between the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), marking a unique collaboration between the energy and environmental sectors.
The program sets forth aggressive targets for marine restoration. Within the first three years, the plan is to plant 500,000 coral colonies. The long-term vision is even more expansive, with a goal of reaching four million corals by the year 2030. This effort is designed to significantly enhance the resilience of Abu Dhabi’s marine ecosystems against the pressures of climate change.
The partnership will involve creating specialized coral nurseries, cultivating heat-resistant species capable of withstanding rising sea temperatures, and implementing comprehensive environmental monitoring programs. ENEC will provide the funding and logistical resources for the project, while EAD will contribute its scientific expertise, overseeing implementation and monitoring ecological outcomes.
This initiative builds upon EAD’s proven track record in large-scale reef restoration. Since 2021, the agency has managed the largest coral reef rehabilitation project in the Gulf, having already cultivated over 1.45 million coral colonies. That project has demonstrated remarkable success, achieving a 95% survival rate after summer seasons and a 50% increase in local fish biomass. The new venture at Barakah reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in regional environmental innovation and underscores a commitment to integrating sustainability into the nation’s core industrial operations.
