Dubai Municipality has initiated a substantial redevelopment project for the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, aiming to transform one of the city’s most unique natural areas. The goal is to significantly boost visitor numbers while enhancing the sanctuary’s ecological and educational value.
Often described as Dubai’s “ecological pearl,” the protected wetland near the city center encompasses salt flats, mangrove forests, and lagoons. Recognized as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) by BirdLife International, Ras Al Khor is a vital habitat for over 450 species of plants and animals, including its famous population of greater flamingos.
The ambitious project, backed by an investment of 650 million UAE dirhams (approximately $177 million), targets increasing annual visitors sixfold, aiming for 250,000 to 300,000 people per year. Key ecological enhancements form the core of the plan:
The overall initiative aims to make the sanctuary more accessible, educational, and environmentally sustainable. By significantly expanding its ecological capacity and visitor infrastructure, Dubai seeks to solidify Ras Al Khor’s status as a premier urban wildlife sanctuary and environmental education center, preserving a vital natural oasis within the heart of the metropolis.
