As the cooler months arrive, the United Arab Emirates opens its spectacular natural landscapes to hiking enthusiasts with at least seven beautifully equipped trails across the country. From sandy paths and hidden oases to Instagram-worthy mountain vistas, outdoor adventurers can discover a different side of the UAE beyond its cities.
Just 30 minutes from Downtown Dubai, Mushrif National Park offers a beginner-friendly 10-kilometer loop with wooden bridges, gentle slopes, and rest areas. For something more unique, the Al Qudra Lakes near Dubai form a stunning man-made oasis where walkers can observe migratory birds at sunrise or sunset. Further afield, Ras Al Khaimah’s Shawka Dam to Shawka Pools trail guides hikers on an 8-kilometer route past a stone staircase, lookout point, and natural mountain pools.
In Sharjah, the Al Rabi Tower Trail in Kor Fakkan rewards hikers with panoramic views of the Hajar Mountains and the Gulf of Oman from 395 meters up. Fujairah boasts the lesser-known Wadi Dahir Trail, where hikers can walk past turquoise sulfur springs and salt formations, and the culturally rich Wadi Tayyibah Trail, which passes ancient irrigation systems and heritage sites. For the more adventurous, the Ghaf Summit Trail on Jebel Jais – the UAE’s highest peak – leads to the country’s tallest publicly accessible point at 1,640 meters.
Each trail offers its own charm, whether it’s wildlife, history, or breathtaking scenery. With options ranging from easy family strolls to more challenging mountain climbs, this year’s hiking season invites everyone to explore the UAE’s unexpected natural beauty.
